Joel A. GoldbergJoel A. Goldberg is the founder and President of Management Development Systems, Inc., a New York City-based management consulting firm specializing in organization development, management and leadership coaching and training, team building, and survey research. He has worked primarily in the pharmaceutical and health care industries. From 1986-2014, Mr. Goldberg's primary client was Merck & Co., Inc. During that time, he designed and delivered management and leadership coaching programs for approximately 35 different Merck departments. He also conducted a broad range of other organization development, survey research, and team building efforts for the manufacturing, research and development, corporate, and human health divisions of the company. Other clients include Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Sanofi, Roche, AstraZeneca, Novartis, Teva, Covance, Taconic, Regeneron, Syndax, MJHS/Elderplan, NYU Langone, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, CBRE, and JLL.

Mr. Goldberg has worked extensively with laboratory animal science groups and has a strong working knowledge of the lab animal science environment. He has worked with managers, supervisors, and technicians, helping to improve teamwork and relationships with principal investigators.

Prior to starting MDS, Inc., in 1985, Mr. Goldberg was the Co-Director of the National Center for Public Productivity, a university-based research and training institute. He has spoken and written extensively on many management and leadership topics, making many conference presentations and contributing to such periodicals as Contemporary Topics, Plant Services, Security Management, National Productivity Review, and Capital District Business Review. He served as an editor of the quarterly journal, Public Productivity Review, and appeared on the PBS television series, "The Business of Management." He was the Editor-in-Chief of Management Matters®, a management newsletter.

In 1983, Mr. Goldberg played a key role in planning and coordinating the White House Conference on Productivity. Other presentations and guest lectures include:

  • co-leader/leader for a half-day workshop on management coaching at the AALAS National Meeting in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, and 2016. At the 2015 Meeting, he also participated on a panel about leading change in lab animal science departments. At the 2016 Meeting, he chaired a panel on leadership.
  • keynote presentation, "It's All About Relationships," at the 2016 Institute for Laboratory Animal Management (ILAM)
  • a webinar, "Communication Skills for Engineers," for the Association for Facilities Engineering (2015)
  • a guest lecture on communication skills for a Human Resources Management in Health Care class at Brooklyn College (2014)
  • a presentation, "Managing the Business in a Changing Environment" for facilities managers of Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) in Latin America (2014)
  • a guest lecture on leadership for the Engineering School at the University of Virginia (2011)
  • a guest lecture, "The Fine Art of Schmoozing," at Rutgers University's School of Communications (2001)
  • a luncheon speech on communication skills at a meeting of the Rochester, New York chapter of the Project Management Institute and a presentation on the same topic at the Rochester PMI's Annual Conference (1999)

Mr. Goldberg recently served on the Board of Directors for the New Jersey Association of Biomedical Research. He is currently serving as a member of the Business Advisory Council of the Porter S. Byrum School of Business, Wingate University, Charlotte, North Carolina. He is also a guest lecturer at the university.

Mr. Goldberg has a Masters degree in Public Administration from John Jay College, City University of New York, and a Masters degree in Education from Brooklyn College, City University of New York.
